In 1993, then Representative Cantwell on the House floor voted for the D.C. statehood bill but since joining the U.S. Senate in 2000, she has not taken a stance on the statehood legislation. Washington’s senior Senator, Patty Murray, and consistently and steadfastly cosponsored the Senate’s statehood legislation every time it’s been introduced since she was elected in 1992. Presently, all 7 of Washington State’s Democratic Representatives in the House are cosponsors of HR 51, and both Washington’s Governor, Jay Inslee, and Attorney General, Bob Ferguson, have publicly endorsed D.C. statehood.
So why won’t Senator Cantwell cosponsor legislation that would ensure that 700,000 Americans have full and equal representation in Congress as well as autonomy over our local affairs?
Please take time today to to call, tweet at, or email Senator Cantwell asking that she “stand with and up for the 700,000 people in D.C. by cosponsoring S. 631, the #DCStatehood bill.”
