On January 15, 2017, as I put my son to bed I did something I rarely do, I sang. After reading stories to him I laid him in his bed and sang ‘We Shall Overcome’ several times. As he lay in his bed I softly sang in a rocking chair thinking of how much progress we have made as a nation when people join together and work for a common cause. I also thought about how much work we still have before us.
Over the course of the next few months there are multiple ways that you can join with your friends, family, and neighbors to have an impact on the statehood movement. Last year we had a planning meeting where we listed several broad subject areas that we want to focus on in 2017: 1) local organizing; 2) national organizing; and 3) congressional advocacy. Here’s a broad recap of what each group could work on:
- Local Organizing: Continue to engage with ANCs, Civic & Citizen Associations, schools, businesses, religious groups, unions, and others to help continue building the local statehood movement. We will need people willing to go to these groups to help recruit new groups and individuals to our movement and we need people to organize teach-ins on statehood at their homes, work, or other venues so that we can continue to build a grassroots movement for statehood through education, outreach, and organizing.
- National Organizing: Meet with and building support from local groups and institutions that have national connections to build a national network of statehood supporters. Initial working groups will target working with unions, colleges & universities, civil/voting rights organizations, and the faith community.
- Congressional Advocacy: On Feb. 15th we, along with other statehood groups, will have our first statehood advocacy day on the Hill so please take off work and join us! After the 15th we will need to develop a plan of action to keep pressure on members of Congress to both support D.C. statehood and to oppose congressional meddling in District affairs.
Please volunteer to be a member of working group by filling out this Google Sheet here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19TsKxELX-K-0khVwBrU0eAb_2Da-NoAe_jul79X3RlI/edit?usp=sharing
We can and we shall overcome with your involvement because as Dr. King said “everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” When you share your heart full of grace and soul generated by love with the statehood movement we shall overcome!
We need you, we welcome you, we respect you, we love you, we thank you, and we will get there together!
