As of May 29, 2013, there are thirty-eight cosponsors on the New Columbia Admission Act, nine more than all of last Congress but eleven fewer than on the Puerto Rico Status Resolution Act. The current thirty-eight cosponsors on HR 292 are the most since 1993, when the bill was last seriously offered and considered in the House of Representatives (at which time it had 84 cosponsors, passed out of Committee, but failed on the House floor by only garnering 151 votes in favor).
Several weeks ago Puerto Rico’s Delegate to the House of Representatives Pedro Pierluisi offered the Puerto Rico Status Resolution Act, HR 2000. HR 2000 endorses and pays for the right of the people of Puerto Rico to choose their own destiny and as it stands now there are 49 cosponsors on the bill in the House including 6 Republicans. The New Columbia Admission Act needs more cosponsors and it needs cosponsors from both parties and the Puerto Rico Status Resolution provides us with a great opportunity to pick up new allies. There are 34 members of Congress who support the right of the people of Puerto Rico to choose statehood but have yet to stand with and stand up for the people of the District to become a state in the union. We need to contact each and every one of these members of the House and say if you stand with the will of the people of Puerto Rico you should also stand with the will of the people of the District.
So over the coming days and weeks it’s time that we reach out to the following members of the House and ask them to cosponsor HR 292, the New Columbia Admission Act:
Rep Castor, Kathy [FL-14]; Rep Costa, Jim [CA-16]; Rep Crowley, Joseph [NY-14]; Rep DeGette, Diana [CO-1]; Rep Diaz-Balart, Mario [FL-25]; Rep Engel, Eliot L. [NY-16]; Rep Fattah, Chaka [PA-2]; Rep Frankel, Lois [FL-22]; Rep Fudge, Marcia L. [OH-11]; Rep Garcia, Joe [FL-26]; Rep Grayson, Alan [FL-9]; Rep Green, Gene [TX-29]; Rep Harris, Andy [MD-1]; Rep Hoyer, Steny H. [MD-5]; Rep Jackson Lee, Sheila [TX-18]; Rep Kaptur, Marcy [OH-9]; Rep Kind, Ron [WI-3]; Rep King, Peter T. [NY-2]; Rep Kirkpatrick, Ann [AZ-1]; Rep Mica, John L. [FL-7]; Rep Miller, George [CA-11]; Rep Perlmutter, Ed [CO-7]; Rep Ros-Lehtinen, Ileana [FL-27]; Rep Sablan, Gregorio Kilili Camacho [MP]; Rep Schock, Aaron [IL-18]; Rep Serrano, Jose E. [NY-15]; Rep Shea-Porter, Carol [NH-1]; Rep Tonko, Paul [NY-20]; Rep Tsongas, Niki [MA-3]; Rep Wasserman Schultz, Debbie [FL-23]; Rep Waxman, Henry A. [CA-33]; Rep Welch, Peter [VT]; Rep Wilson, Frederica S. [FL-24]; and Rep Young, Don [AK].
If the above members can support the right of the people of Puerto Rico to decide their fate then they should stand with the people of the District who have already exercised our right and voted for statehood in 1980 and adopted a state constitution in 1982. We’ve been waiting 33 years for Congress to respect our will and allow us to join the union as the 51st state. We have reached out to all of these offices and have begun to meet with them and we encourage you to do the same.
