On Saturday, January 12th, 2013, the newly formed Ward 5 Neighbors for Statehood will have its kick-off meeting at 10am. This group is for District citizens, focused on those of us in Ward 5, interested in getting involved in the grassroots movement to achieve DC Statehood. For over a year the Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association’s DC Statehood Committee had been hosting monthly meetings to coordinate efforts in Brookland toward promoting DC Statehood (the state of New Columbia).
Since November 2011, group members have focused on two main areas: 1) Education and outreach and; 2) lobbying members of Congress to support the New Columbia Admission Act. Through our education and outreach work we’ve made dozens of presentations at local meetings, events, schools, and at national conferences to discuss the importance of DC Statehood and reached hundreds of people through that work. Through our lobbying work on Capitol Hill we’ve met with over 50 House offices and 14 Senate offices to discuss the importance of DC Statehood which resulted in multiple members of the House and Senate signing on as cosponsors to the respective statehood bills. Our core group is not huge in numbers but we’ve accomplished a lot and by now actively recruiting other neighborhoods to join us we believe that our work and achievements will grow exponentially.
Over the course of the last year the number of non-Brooklanders attending our meetings have grown and grown making it time for our group to adjust accordingly. As such, following the organizing model of Neighbors United for DC Statehood and partnering with the newly formed DC Statehood Coalition, the Brookland initiated group is now a Ward 5-wide group. One of our goals will be to have people within our group that can act as liaisons to the many civic and citizens associations around the Ward so that we have a presence at each civic meeting and within each civic group. We want to keep the entire Ward abreast about what we are doing while also presenting opportunities for individuals and civic groups to take concrete and coordinated action in support of DC Statehood.
We cordially invite you to join us and to learn about what our group has done, what it is doing presently, and take part in planning what we shall do in the future. The meeting is to learn about what we are doing but our work takes every day of the week. If you cannot join us but want to get involved please contact us as we have plenty of work for all to do.
The meeting starts at 10am on January 12th, in Brookland. For the exact location contact Josh Burch at firstname.lastname@example.org
Join us, we’d love to have you!
