Deep in the heart of Brookland this past Saturday the inaugural Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association DC Statehood Committee meeting took place. The BNCA DC Statehood Committee, formed in November 2011, will work to educate and inform Brooklanders about the reasons and need for Statehood while also advocating for Statehood to Congress. The meeting was a lively 2 hour strategy sessions where committee members all agreed to take on and complete various tasks between now and our next meeting on January 14th, 2012.
Neighbors United for DC Statehood sees what’s happening in Brookland as the path forward for organizing neighborhood by neighborhood to create a sustainable grassroots movement to push for Statehood. After our initial Neighbors United for DC Statehood meeting here in Brookland in May it took 6 months to push, and push, and organize and finally, we have a link with the local civic association. The push for Statehood should be one of the core issues that civic & citizen associations across the District push for. Our hope is that in the coming year we’ll have Statehood groups in each and every one of those neighborhood associations.
Let’s keep educating, organizing, and acting…we have a lot left to do.
