Back in July I joined an effort set up by a fellow Brooklander to have citizens of the District adopt members of Congress since we have no voting members in either the House or the Senate. This is a great lobbying effort that District residents can do as well as folks from the 50 states (our friends and relatives). I wrote to 9 members of the House and 4 from the Senate and only got one response (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/mike-debonis/post/warners-fellow-virginians-include-dc-resident/2011/09/22/gIQALvANoK_blog.html). Clearly a lot of work, education and pressure is needed to help all members of Congress understand our plight and our cause as citizens of the District of Columbia.
We deserve statehood and we need to educate members of Congress about why we deserve it. Join the effort today. You can lobby from the comfort of your own home but we need to send lots of letters and knock on lots of doors. Here are two documents to help get you started on this project:
